Justin Shoulder

Ready yourself as Justin Shoulder brings Lolo ex Machina and Carrion to Neon Lights Festival 2018!Lolo ex Machina, is born from Shoulder’s family of ‘Fantastic Creatures’. Drawing from a broad cultural and historical base of composite fabulae – from sphinx to preternatural vampire – alive in contemporary pop culture, Shoulder imagines his own fantastic creatures.

Lolo ex Machina introduces a mythical creature that is an ancestral jeepney spirit. Justin Shoulder’s lolo (grandfather) was a jeepney driver and dance instructor in Manila – Shoulder’s memories of him are passed down from his nanay’s (mother) accounts as all material documentation was lost in a series of floods.

As a continuation of Shoulder’s repertoire of bestiary, Carrion, a hybrid human/animal/ cyborgian being, delves into ancient wisdoms, the mess of the present and polymorphous complexity of a speculative future.

Justin Shoulder is an artist working in performance, sculpture, video and nightlife or community events production.

His main body of work “Phasmahammer” is an ecology of alter personas based on queered ancestral myth. These creatures are embodied through hand crafted costumes and prosthesis, and are animated by their own gestural languages. Shoulder uses his body and craft to forge connections between queer, migrant, spiritual and intercultural experiences. He is a founding member of queer artist collective The Glitter Militia and Club Ate, a gang of Asia-pacific sissies.

He has performed and exhibited internationally, some recent highlights include: Carrion at Fusebox Festival (USA, 2018); the video body of work Ex Nilalang for AsiaTOPA by Club Ate (Australia, 2017), First Sight at Museum Macan (Indonesia, 2017), and the premiere of his feature length theatre work Carrion for Liveworks, Performance Space Sydney 2017.
